What is a Prerequisite Course?
Some courses in Grades 10, 11, and 12 may have prerequisites for enrollment. A prerequisite course is required to make sure you have the knowledge and experience of the fundamentals to allow you to complete and succeed in a subsequent course.
A prerequisite is usually a course in the same subject but at a lower level – for example, ENG4U (English, Grade 12, University Preparation) requires the completion of ENG3U (English, Grade 11, University Preparation). ENG3U is considered to be the prerequisite for ENG4U.
All prerequisite courses are identified in ministry curriculum policy documents and in our course descriptions. Prerequisites are mandatory for you to enroll in a course and successfully earn an OSSD credit.
Rosedale Prerequisite Policy
Students are responsible for obtaining the necessary prerequisites for a course. Students must submit proof of meeting the necessary requirements before starting a course.
How to Meet Prerequisite Requirements?
There are a number of easy ways to prove that you have completed your prerequisite requirements.
In general, we accept one of the following documents as proof:
- Ontario Student Transcript
- Report cards
- PLAR assessment results
- A statement from the principal that waives your prerequisite.
For students in Ontario:
- Simply send us a copy of your Ontario Student Transcript or your report card with the prerequisite course on the record, and you are set!
For students living out of province or internationally:
- Simply send us your official transcript from your current education program. We will evaluate your transcript to determine whether you meet the prerequisite requirement
If you do not have one of the above documents but still believe that you have already acquired the knowledge of a prerequisite from previous learning or work experiences, please complete the Request to Waive Prerequisite form. The school will assess your circumstance on a case-by-case basis to determine whether the prerequisite can be waived.
For any additional questions on prerequisites, please feel free to contact us at 905-604-7533 or email firstname.lastname@example.org and our program adviser will be happy to assist you.
